Boston Athletic Association clubhouse opens.
December 29, 1888
It is located at 84 Exeter Street. The building includes a basement swimming pool and steam baths, mezzanine bowling alley, second-floor billiard room and library, third-floor gymnasium and track, and fourth-floor court tennis facilities. The organization was incorporated on March 15, 1887. Robert Clark is the first president. The first BAA track and field competition is held in 1891 and the last in the early 1970s. The clubhouse closes due to a decline in membership and financial difficulties, at midnight, August 3, 1935, (8/13-WPA) and the organization moves to 131 Clarendon Street. The original building is subsequently demolished to make way for an addition to the Boston Public Library in 1972.*
